![]() ![]() Players are treated to glimpses of pre-Calamity Hyrule through flashbacks and the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity spin-off game, but exploring an open-world version of this civilization has never been possible. Because of this semi-apocalypse, the world of Hyrule in BOTW features more empty stretches of land, bodies of water, and mountain ranges than the usual villages, towns, and castles that the series is known for. The game takes place one hundred years after a catastrophic event known as The Calamity, brought about by the enduring series villain Ganon. The most recent official Legend of Zelda entry, Breath of the Wild broke new ground in open-world gaming with its massive, secret-filled vision of the iconic kingdom of Hyrule. The pre-disaster world is robust and dense, with the creator using Minecraft's sprawling and emergent crafting system to replicate many of BOTW's locations and even some of the game's mechanics. A talented Minecraftplayer recently impressed the internet with an incredible recreation of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Hyrule before the apocalyptic Calamity that wiped out most of civilization.
